Packing
Tips
Packing
at Home - What to Pack
Pack
in advance. A few weeks prior to traveling we usually
get one suit case and leave it open somewhere in the
house. Everyone places in it important things they
do not want to forget. This allows you to pack things
when you think of them. Then when everyone is packing
we get those special things from that suitcase and
pack them accordingly.
Ask
your children what outfits they would like to wear
while on vacation and involve them in the packing
process. Then they will be less likely to complain
while on vacation. If you let your children or teenagers
pack their own things, make sure they have everything
they need. You may find their suitcase full of T-shirts
and shorts, but no underwear, socks, or warmer clothes
for a cool day.
Bring
water shoes for the children. Little toes, some bigger
ones too, get raw after a few hours in the pool each
day and bringing water shoes from home saves you time
shopping for them.
Sun
hats for the children are a must and often get forgotten
at home because there is snow on the ground and they
are wearing mittens rather than sun hats. I always
bring the hats we bought at Disney on our last vacation;
otherwise you get quite a pile at home
Do
not pack any valuables in luggage that is being checked.
Carry any valuables and identification documents,
plane tickets, and check-in directions with you either
in your carry-on or purse.
Packing
at Home - How to Pack
We
love plastic bags. Pack your shoes in plastic bags.
This helps keep your clothes clean and stops the sharp
corners of the heels of the shoes from putting snags
in your clothes. Pack shampoo or anything that can
leak in a freezer quality Ziploc bag. Take a few extra
baggies in your carry on.
Pack
breakable times in your carry on, rather than in luggage
you will check. Remember you are carrying breakables
when you set your bag down or walk through a heavy
door.
Pack
an extra, soft nylon bag just in case what you buy
while on vacation will not fit into your suit case
for the trip home. Another option is to leave a bit
of room in your suit case so that items you purchase
while on vacation will fit in on the trip home.
If
you have room, pack a change of clothes in your carry
on. If your luggage gets lost or even just misplaced
for a day you will at least have one extra set of
clothes.
Remember
our vacation homes come complete with large capacity
washers and dryers. This means you can pack fewer
clothes. Try to pack machine washable items only.
Leave hand washables and dry clean only items at home.
You are on vacation, remember.
Tie
a distinctive piece of ribbon, seam binding, bit of
fabric, or a bandana to the handle of all or your
luggage. This will make it easy to distinguish from
all the other black and brown luggage at the baggage
claim. Do not leave loose ends dangling; just a few
knots and a two inch piece of color showing will be
sufficient.
Before
Leaving Home
Take
only essential credit cards. We recommend traveling
with two credit cards, but if you have more and do
not need them, then leave them at home. Also, leave
any other cards at home that you will not need during
your vacation. In the event that you do loose your
purse or wallet you will not have lost everything.
At
the Airport
Count
the number of suit cases and carry-ons your travel
group has. Keep track of that number. Once you have
checked your baggage count your carry-ons (including
all purses, diaper bags, etc. If you need to carry
it, count it.) Make sure you get on and off the plane
with the same number of bags.
While
Traveling to Florida
Take
a back pack for each child. Fill the back pack with
some favorite toys, baggies with favorite food that
will not spoil easily, books, coloring books, crayons,
etc. This is great for while in the car, on the plane,
or waiting at an airport.
Pack
a spare change of clothes for each child, somewhere
you can get at it easily. When we travel by car we
pack a "travel suit case" which includes
just what everyone needs to stay at the hotel while
we are traveling to Florida. This means that we only
have to take one suit case into the hotel at night.
If you are traveling with more than four people you
may need to pack two suit cases, but it is much better
than taking eight suit cases into the hotel each night
and then repacking your entire vehicle each day. This
also really helps if someone spills something on themselves
in the car. You can get them changed without having
to unload the car to get at their suit case, which
is usually on the bottom.
Remember
your coats. Many vacationers heading to Florida are
traveling from a cooler climate and will have a coat
or jacket. Once you arrive in Florida, where it is
wonderfully warm, you may forget about your jackets.
We recommend packing an extra soft, nylon bag in your
carry-on. Once on the plane put the jackets in it
and now you only have one bag to carry rather than
a bundle of lose jackets. Also, remember to get your
jackets and coats out of the closet in the vacation
homes when you check out.
Baby
wipes are great to travel with or buy a new large
box of J-Cloths. Cut the J-Cloths in half, wet them
(they are not filled with soap like they used to be),
and put two pieces in a small baggie. They will then
fit easily into your pocket, purse, or travel bag.
You can either throw them out or wash them and use
them again.
Take
only essential credit cards. We recommend traveling
with two credit cards, but if you have more and do
not need them, then leave them at home. Also, leave
any other cards at home that you will not need during
your vacation. In the event that you do loose your
purse or wallet you will not have lost everything.
At
the Vacation Home
Please
have a responsible adult check the entire home and
pool area prior to your check-out. We will do our
best to help you locate lost items, however it is
often difficult to know what belonged to which set
of guests. Once new guests go into the vacation home
they use whatever is there. Make sure you get your
jackets, coats, shoes, and boots out of the closets
in the vacation homes when you check out.
